Candidate Recognition

A key element for the successful application of the technology is Well Selection.

Candidate RecognitionThe process begins with gathering and organizing well data provided by the client. This data includes logs, well records, reservoir characteristics and information on previous work overs or treatments.

From this information, wells that have the potential for significant production enhancement from the application of radial drilling can be identified.

The process includes:

  • Determine the well potential (cumulative production and present remaining recoverable reserves)
  • Identify the zone of interest
  • Determine the “safe” lateral length into the reservoir, the hole angle and direction
  • Select formation compatible drilling fluids

The effectiveness of radial drilling largely depends on well selection and reservoir factors, but is also a function of post well activities including:

Swabbing

- Cleaning of the used drilling fluids by means of swabbing is recommended. This activity will also induce the flowing of the formation fluids after stagnation created during the radial drilling operations.

Acidizing

- Depending on the formation, a chemical treatment can take place, either after drilling each lateral by using the Radcan system to convey the chemicals into the lateral or by using a dual packer system to isolate the radials and inject chemicals under pressure.
